The working garden

Food, flowers and daily chores share a clear, durable garden plan.

Raised cedar vegetable beds with espalier fruit and gravel path

The brief

The narrow rear garden needs sunny growing space, a family table, compost access and a route wide enough for a wheelbarrow. Morning shade falls along the eastern boundary while the center receives six hours of summer sun.

The considered details

Compacted gravel forms the main route, cedar beds hold productive soil and clay pavers mark the dining threshold. Espalier pear, herbs and pollinator planting use the boundaries; annual mulch, irrigation checks and crop rotation anchor the care plan.
